Example of why never forgetting your base is critical: Democrats’ long reign In Washington state could be imperiled

http://www.kplu.org/post/democrats%E2%80%99-long-reign-washington-could-be-imperiled

There’s a maxim in matters of the heart that also applies to politics: dance with the one that brung ya. Country singer Shania Twain even has a song about it: “You gotta dance with the one that brought you. And stay with the one that wants you.”

Polls show voters think Washington is headed in the wrong direction. Majority Democrats are at odds with some of their key constituencies. And Republicans have found – in Attorney General Rob McKenna – a highly competitive gubernatorial candidate for 2012.

Who vets independent counter-terrorism trainers for local/state law enforcement?

apparently noone

“The first inkling that something was amiss in the counterterrorism training given to local and federal law enforcement came in March. That’s when NPR reported on the cottage industry of independent counterterrorism trainers who signed up to teach local and federal law enforcement officials about terrorism. The report warned that the instructors were not being properly vetted and some were presenting skewed views about Muslim-Americans and their potential links to terrorism.”

India’s new poverty line “laughable”

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is under immense pressure as public uproar over the country’s new poverty benchmark intensifies. With the new poverty threshold guidelines, millions of Indians stand to lose their food and welfare benefits.

As part of a new food security legislation, the Planning Commission proposes a daily income threshold of Rs 32 ($0.64) for urban areas like Delhi and Mumbai and Rs 26 ($0.52) for rural areas. The World Bank’s poverty line is $1.25 per day.

. . .

Poverty line estimates in India are traditionally calculated by nutrition intake and results suggest that under-nutrition may be much more widespread than income poverty.

India is home to more poor people than the entire sub-Saharan Africa region. As many as 400 million Indians live on less than $2 a day.

McClatcheydc.com: Appearances count in debates, as GOP candidates discover

“I told the guy, ‘Do you realize that Perry is trying to look like Ronald Reagan?”

Towery, who is based in Atlanta, Ga, is a former national debate champion, and one-time debate coach for his former boss, Newt Gingrich. Sensitive to non-verbal nuances, Towery immediately picked up on Perry’s gesture, and its echoes of his party’s icon.

“Every time someone says something, he cocks his head with a little smile on his face,” said Towery. “Reagan would always move his head to one side and act as if he couldn’t quite believe what the other person was saying. I guarantee that’s what he’s trying to do.”

. . .

As the only woman in the race, Michele Bachmann faces the double standard that plagues female candidates. The Minnesota congresswoman’s deep-set eyes are noticeably enhanced by false eyelashes, and she has good hair days and bad hair days. In an August debate in Iowa, she frequently left the stage to freshen her makeup and was late returning once, prompting the incredulous moderator to ask “Are we actually missing a candidate on the stage?” In a debate earlier this month at the Reagan Library, Bachmann’s hair was more teased than usual.

Daily Kos on Mitt Romney’s investment in Fannie & Freddie

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/09/20/1018676/-Mitt-Romney:-Fannie-and-Freddie-suck-Thats-why-I-invest-in-them?via=siderecent

The Boston Globe noted today that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who has a habit of lambasting the “failures” of government-backed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has been profiting from investments in the two firms:

“On his financial disclosure statement filed last month, Romney reported owning between $250,001 and $500,000 in a mutual fund that invests in debt notes of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, among other government entities. Over the previous year, he had reported earning between $15,001 and $50,000 in interest from those investments.”

.. . .

DK update:

Romney made the investment in a mutual fund called the Government Obligation Fund, managed by Federated Investors Inc. The fund invests in a wide variety of sources, including government agencies and US Treasury notes. But out of a $28.5 billion portfolio, nearly half of the fund was in Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Federal Home Loan Bank notes, according to an SEC filing made in April.

In addition to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the fund also has investments in investment agreements with several banks that received federal bailout money, including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and JP Morgan.

Make open meeting law apply to the legislature!

When I was first appointed to Milford’s Renewable Energy Advisory Committee, I had to take a short course in compliance with the open meeting law. I was angry when I found out that the legislature had exempted themselves from that law, and given the corruption we’ve seen on Beacon Hill just since I found that out, I think it’s well past time to take a look at it.  Well, someone in the legislature thinks so as well, and it will come up in a hearing this Tuesday at 11 am – see this post at BlueMassGroup.com for further discussion.

The person who wrote that post is Deborah Sirotkin Butler, a long time Democratic activist and lawyer.  I am unable to attend the hearing, but she has offered to take a white paper for me.  I’ll email the executive committee for input, I think we should weigh in on this.
